About Sheep Mountain Airport

Sheep Mountain Airport (SMU) is a small public-use airstrip in Southcentral Alaska, located along the Glenn Highway near Sheep Mountain and the Matanuska Glacier in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. Activated in August 1950, it is owned by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities and serves general aviation and emergency access rather than scheduled airline traffic.

The airport sits at an elevation of about 2,750 feet and has a single gravel/dirt runway, 5/23, with no control tower and no published instrument procedures. The runway is listed for emergency use only, and conditions can be affected by wind, weather and seasonal surface issues.

Sheep Mountain lies roughly 113 miles east of Anchorage along the Glenn Highway, between Palmer and Glennallen, with a normal road journey of around two hours from Anchorage. Because the airstrip is unattended, pilots and travelers typically confirm conditions and coordinate road pickups before arriving.

With no scheduled passenger terminal, onward travel is usually arranged in advance by private transfer, rental car or pre-booked vehicle. The Glenn Highway corridor provides access to Palmer, Glennallen, the Matanuska Glacier area and other Southcentral Alaska destinations.
