About Shaw Air Force Base
Shaw Air Force Base is a major U.S. Air Force installation serving Sumter, South Carolina, and the surrounding region. Activated in 1942, the base has supported military aviation for more than eight decades and remains an important part of the area's defense infrastructure.
The base is home to the 20th Fighter Wing, which flies F-16 Fighting Falcons, and serves as the headquarters of the Ninth Air Force. Its military mission focuses on combat-ready airpower rather than commercial passenger travel, and access to the installation is restricted.
Located about 6 miles northwest of downtown Sumter, the base is reached by road from the city and from nearby communities. It lies roughly 40 miles east of Columbia, with road links that connect it to central South Carolina and beyond.
Because Shaw Air Force Base is a military airfield, it does not provide public passenger terminals or commercial airline services. Travelers needing scheduled flights typically use nearby commercial airports, while the base continues to serve as a key hub for U.S. Air Force operations.
