About Seymour Johnson Air Force Base
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina, and the home of the 4th Fighter Wing and the 916th Air Refueling Wing. Although GSB is primarily a military airfield rather than a commercial airport, its Air Mobility Command passenger terminal supports duty travel and Space-Available flights for eligible military travelers.
The field was activated in June 1942 as an Army Air Forces technical training school and was named in honor of Lt Seymour A. Johnson, a Goldsboro native and Navy test pilot. It was deactivated after World War II in 1946 and reactivated in 1956 as Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
Located a few miles southeast of the Goldsboro city center, the base is served by road connections and is roughly an hour's drive from Raleigh and the Research Triangle. Its single main runway, 08/26, is about 3,584 m long and supports fighter and air refueling operations.
Travelers using the AMC passenger terminal should plan ahead, since facilities and parking are limited and flights can change. Access to the installation is controlled, and onward travel is typically arranged by private car, taxi, rental vehicle or pre-booked transfer.
