About Scholes International Airport at Galveston
Scholes International Airport at Galveston is the primary general aviation airport serving Galveston and Galveston Island on the Texas Gulf Coast. Opened in 1931, the airport functions today as a public-use reliever airport for private pilots, business aviation and charter operations.
Located about three miles southwest of downtown Galveston and roughly 45 miles southeast of Houston along Interstate 45, the airport has a single passenger terminal and two runways. It does not offer scheduled commercial airline service, which operates from Houston's William P. Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental airports.
The main terminal was damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008 and rebuilt, reopening in April 2011 after temporary facilities were used in the interim. The fixed-base operator Island Jet Center provides fueling, aircraft services, a passenger lounge, conference space, Wi-Fi and rental car assistance for arriving crews and passengers.
Ground transportation from the airport is available by taxi, rideshare, rental car and pre-arranged private transfer, with downtown Galveston, the Seawall, UTMB Health and the cruise terminals within a short drive. Nearby attractions include Moody Gardens, Schlitterbahn Water Park and the historic Strand District.
