About Scammon Bay Airport

Scammon Bay Airport (SCM) is the air gateway to Scammon Bay, a small Yup'ik community of roughly 600 people on the Kun River near the Bering Sea in western Alaska. Because the village is not connected to the road system, the airport is essential for passenger travel, medical access, food, and supplies.

In public operation since 1973 and owned by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities, the airport operates a single unpaved runway about 3,000 feet long. Small regional aircraft connect Scammon Bay with Bethel and other communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.

The airport sits at the edge of the village and has no passenger terminal or terminal services; travelers board and disembark at the apron. Ground transport in Scammon Bay is mostly by foot, ATV, or local vehicle.

Scheduled and charter flights link the village with Bethel, the regional hub roughly 140–150 miles to the southeast, where passengers connect onward to Anchorage and other destinations. The runway lies beside the Kun River and is subject to seasonal flooding, and state planning work is underway to improve the airport's long-term resilience.
