About Sanderson Field
Sanderson Field is a public general aviation airport serving Shelton and the surrounding Mason County area in Washington. It is located about 3 miles northwest of downtown Shelton and is owned and operated by the Port of Shelton.
The airport opened in the late 1920s as Mason County Airport. During World War II it served as Naval Air Station Shelton before returning to civilian use; it was reopened in 1966 and named after Major General Lawson H. Sanderson.
Today the airport has one active asphalt runway, 5/23, measuring 5,005 feet, and handles general aviation, charter, flight training, and skydiving operations. It does not have a commercial airline terminal; passenger services are arranged through FBOs and operators.
Sanderson Field is reached by road via U.S. Highway 101, with private transfers, chauffeur services, rental cars, and pre-arranged vehicles connecting travelers to Shelton, Olympia, Hood Canal, and the wider South Puget Sound and Olympic Peninsula region.
