Sand Point Airport (SDP)

Sand Point Airport is a state-owned, public-use airport serving Sand Point, a small community of about 600 residents on Popof Island in Alaska's Aleutians East Borough. Activated in June 1958, it remains an essential air link for the eastern Aleutian Islands, where scheduled air service connects the community to Anchorage and nearby towns.

Located about two miles southwest of Sand Point, the airport sits on a coastal site at an elevation of roughly 23 feet. It has one asphalt/grooved runway, 14/32, measuring 5,213 feet long and 150 feet wide, with instrument approach procedures supporting operations in Alaska's challenging weather. A single passenger terminal handles all scheduled and general aviation traffic.

The airport is maintained by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities and has no control tower, with communications handled through Cold Bay Flight Service Station and Anchorage Center. The local road network connects the airport to Sand Point, while the harbor and seasonal Alaska Marine Highway ferry provide additional regional travel options.

For travelers, the airport offers a compact and efficient experience, with a short transfer to town and basic terminal facilities. Its role as a lifeline for residents, fishing industry workers, and visitors makes it an important regional gateway in the Aleutians.
