The facility was activated in 1963 and operates from a single water runway oriented north-south, measuring about 10,000 by 2,000 feet. There is no control tower, terminal building, or conventional land runway; floatplanes dock along the shoreline near the cannery.
Located roughly 40 miles west of Kodiak, the base is reached primarily by scheduled and chartered floatplane service, with Island Air Service historically providing scheduled connections to Kodiak under the Essential Air Service program. There is no road access, so travel depends on aircraft or boats.
