About San Francisco International Airport
San Francisco International Airport is the main international airport serving San Francisco and the wider Bay Area, including Silicon Valley, Oakland and Napa Valley. It opened in 1927 as Mills Field and has grown into one of the region's most important air gateways for domestic and international travel.
Located in San Mateo County, about 21 km (13 miles) south of downtown San Francisco, the airport is a major hub for United Airlines and a focus city for Alaska Airlines. Its four terminals — Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3 and the International Terminal — are connected by the automated AirTrain system and handle a broad network of flights across the United States, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
Passengers can reach the city centre and surrounding areas by BART, which stops directly at the airport, by Caltrain via the nearby Millbrae station, and by bus, taxi, rideshare, private transfer or rental car. The BART trip to downtown San Francisco takes around 30 minutes, while road travel times vary with traffic.
The airport provides modern terminal facilities, free Wi-Fi, shopping, dining, lounges and SFO Museum exhibitions, making it a convenient gateway for travellers arriving in or departing from Northern California.
