About San Diego International Airport

San Diego International Airport is the main commercial airport serving San Diego and the surrounding Southern California region. Located about 3 miles (5 km) northwest of downtown San Diego, it is one of the closest major U.S. airports to a city centre and is known as the busiest single-runway airport in the United States.

The airport opened in 1928 as Lindbergh Field and was renamed San Diego International Airport in 2003. It operates two passenger terminals with 51 gates, serving 17 airlines and nonstop routes to more than 80 destinations on five continents. The first phase of the new Terminal 1 opened in September 2025, while Terminal 2 is divided into East and West concourses.

Travelers can reach downtown and nearby coastal areas by public bus, taxi, ride-hailing services, private transfers, hotel and rental car shuttles, and rental cars from the on-airport Rental Car Center. The airport’s compact layout and proximity to the city make onward connections relatively quick and convenient.

Passengers have access to dining, shopping, lounges, free Wi-Fi with two-hour sessions, charging stations and accessibility services throughout Terminals 1 and 2, making SAN a practical gateway for leisure and business visitors to San Diego County.
