The airport is jointly owned and operated by the City of Salida and Chaffee County and sits about two miles west of downtown Salida at the base of the Collegiate Peaks. Located at an elevation of 7,523 feet, the airport supports private, charter, and recreational flying rather than scheduled airline service. Its asphalt runway 6/24 is approximately 7,350 feet long and 75 feet wide, with a concrete helipad available for helicopter operations. The airport is a practical entry point for the Upper Arkansas River Valley, with Monarch Mountain roughly 18 miles away and outdoor recreation including whitewater rafting, hiking, and mountain access in the surrounding area.
