About Sacramento Mather Airport
Sacramento Mather Airport is a public airport in Sacramento County, California, serving primarily air cargo, corporate aviation and general aviation traffic. The site opened in 1918 as Mather Field and later served as Mather Air Force Base before being decommissioned in 1993 and reopened as a civilian airport in 1995.
Located about 12 miles east of downtown Sacramento, the airport provides access to the greater Sacramento region and Northern California. It features two parallel runways, including an 11,300-foot runway that is among the longest in California and can accommodate large, heavily loaded cargo aircraft.
The airport is owned and operated by the Sacramento County Airport System and is reached by road from downtown Sacramento and nearby communities such as Rancho Cordova and Folsom. Ground transportation to the city centre is available by taxi, rideshare, private transfer and chauffeur service, with rental cars available through off-airport providers.
Rather than a traditional airline terminal, Mather operates a general aviation terminal and FBO facilities with passenger lounges and free parking near the terminal. Its long runway, cargo infrastructure and FAA control tower make it an important freight and general aviation hub for the region.
