About Rurutu Airport
Rurutu Airport is the only airport serving the island of Rurutu in French Polynesia's Austral Islands. It connects the island with Papeete on Tahiti and with neighboring Austral Islands including Tubuai and Rimatara through Air Tahiti domestic services.
The airport has a single asphalt runway of about 1,450 metres and one small passenger terminal, located approximately 2.5 km northeast of Moerai, the main village. It is the primary entry point for visitors arriving to explore the island's villages, caves and coastline.
Transport options are limited; there is no public bus service, so most travelers use pre-arranged transfers, taxis or rental cars to reach Moerai, Avera and Hauti. Travel time to Moerai is normally about 5-10 minutes.
Despite its small size, the airport plays an important regional role, supporting local travel, tourism and the seasonal whale-watching period from July to October when humpback whales are present around the island.
