About Butembo Airport
Butembo Airport, also known as Rughenda Airfield, is a civil airport serving Butembo, a major trading city in North Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It operates primarily as a domestic airfield connecting the city with other parts of the country.
The airfield lies within the city, close to the commercial centre, and has a single unpaved runway of about 700 metres. Its central location makes the airport highly accessible from Butembo, although aircraft movements share space with city streets and access is sometimes controlled by local guards.
The airport is used mainly for domestic and regional flights, with small aircraft linking Butembo to destinations such as Goma and Beni. Set at an elevation of around 1,500 metres, it serves as a practical arrival point for travellers visiting North Kivu and the surrounding highlands.
