Rosecrans Memorial Airport (STJ)

Rosecrans Memorial Airport is a joint civil-military public airport serving St. Joseph and northwestern Missouri. It lies about 3 miles (5 km) northwest of the city center and roughly 35 miles north of Kansas City. The airport is named in honor of Guy Wallace Rosecrans, a St. Joseph native who served with the U.S. Army Air Service during World War I.

The present airport was developed by the city in 1939 and activated in 1940, then taken over during World War II as an Army Air Forces base. Much of the property was later conveyed back to the city, except for land retained for the Air National Guard. Scheduled commercial service by airlines such as Braniff, Frontier, Ozark and TWA ended by 1972, when Kansas City International Airport opened about 30 miles to the south.

Today the airport operates two runways and serves general aviation, charter flights, pilot training and military operations. It is home to the Missouri Air National Guard's 139th Airlift Wing and the Advanced Airlift Tactics Training Center. A newer terminal building and reconstructed main runway have recently been completed, with a new air traffic control tower under construction.

Rosecrans offers fixed-base operator services, a restaurant, rental car access and taxi service, making it a practical gateway for private and business travelers to St. Joseph and the surrounding region.
