Rome State Airport (REO)

Rome State Airport is a small public airfield located in Malheur County in the remote high desert of southeastern Oregon. It serves Rome and the surrounding Owyhee region, mainly for general aviation, private flying, and access to rural and recreational areas. The airfield was originally built by the United States Army Air Forces around 1942 as Rome Flight Strip, an emergency landing field for military aircraft on training flights. After World War II it was closed and later transferred for local government use, and it is now owned and operated by the Oregon Department of Aviation. The airport sits approximately 23 miles southwest of Rome, Oregon, and has a single gravel runway, 3/21, measuring about 6,000 feet by 150 feet. It has no control tower and is unattended, so pilots coordinate arrivals and departures using the common traffic advisory frequency. Road access links the airfield to Rome and other rural communities in the region. Because commercial passenger services are not available, travelers typically continue by private vehicle or pre-arranged road transport to destinations in southeastern Oregon and nearby areas.
