About Rimatara Airport
Rimatara Airport is the only airport on Rimatara, the westernmost inhabited island of the Austral Islands in French Polynesia. Opened in 2006, it ended the island's long reliance on sea transport and provides regular domestic links to Papeete and neighboring islands.
The airport has a single compact terminal in traditional Polynesian style and one asphalt runway that accommodates Air Tahiti's ATR turboprop aircraft. Services operate a few times a week, with flights to Papeete taking around 1 hour 40 minutes and sometimes stopping at Rurutu or other Austral islands.
Located close to the main village of Amaru, the airport is reached in only a few minutes by road. There are no regular buses or taxis; most visitors are met by guesthouse hosts who arrange transfers, while bicycles and scooters are common for exploring the island.
Facilities are deliberately simple, with a small waiting area, restrooms and ground-level access, but no shops, cafes, lounges, ATMs or Wi-Fi. Arrivals include bio-security checks to protect the rare Kuhl's lorikeet, making the airport a careful gateway to Rimatara's quiet, ecologically rich island community.
