About Redstone Army Airfield
Redstone Army Airfield is a military airport at Redstone Arsenal, about 10 km southwest of downtown Huntsville, Alabama. It supports U.S. Army aviation, NASA and other federal government flight operations rather than scheduled airline service.
The airfield dates to 1943, when an airstrip was established on Huntsville Arsenal to support incendiary bomb testing. After the Army Ballistic Missile Agency was activated in 1956, it became a fully operational Army airfield, and its single asphalt runway was later extended to about 2,225 metres to handle large military and cargo aircraft, including Space Shuttle-related operations.
Because the installation is an active military base, access is controlled and flights require prior permission. Commercial passengers use nearby Huntsville International Airport, while HUA remains a working military and government aviation facility.
For authorized personnel and approved visitors, the airfield connects to Huntsville by road, with base access through the visitor control center on Rideout Road.
