About RAF Honington

RAF Honington is a Royal Air Force station in Suffolk, England, situated roughly 6 miles south of Thetford and about 10 miles north of Bury St Edmunds. Opened on 3 May 1937, it began as a bomber station during the RAF's pre-war expansion and later played a major role for the United States Army Air Forces, which used it from 1942 as a B-17 repair depot and from 1944 as home to the 364th Fighter Group.

After returning to the RAF in 1946, the station hosted transport, Canberra, Valiant, Victor, Buccaneer and Tornado units, and a 9,000 ft concrete runway was completed in 1956. In 1994 the station was handed over to the RAF Regiment and became its depot and training centre.

Today RAF Honington is primarily a training and force protection hub rather than a commercial airport. It is home to the RAF Regiment and RAF Police training organisations, the RAF Force Protection Centre, No. 611 Volunteer Gliding Squadron and supporting Army and civilian personnel.

Road links connect the station to Thetford and Bury St Edmunds, with onward travel available by taxi, private transfer or rental car. Although there are no scheduled passenger services, approved private and business flights can use the airfield by prior arrangement, making it a specialist gateway to Breckland and East Anglia.
