About Puvirnituq Airport
Puvirnituq Airport is the regional airport serving Puvirnituq, an Inuit community on the Hudson Bay coast in Nunavik, northern Quebec. It is a key air hub for the Hudson Bay coast, providing scheduled flights to other Nunavik communities and connections to Montreal and other southern destinations.
Located about one kilometre north of the village centre, the airport has a single gravel runway. The runway was extended to about 6,300 feet in a major upgrade completed in 2013, allowing larger jet aircraft such as Air Inuit's Boeing 737-200C to operate.
Between 2009 and 2012, the governments of Canada and Quebec invested more than $45 million in improvements, including a new terminal building roughly four times larger than the former one, an enlarged aircraft apron and a relocated access road.
Puvirnituq has no road connection to the rest of Quebec, so the airport is essential for passengers, cargo and medical evacuation flights. The Kativik Regional Government has managed and maintained Nunavik's airports since 1996.
