About Port Clarence Coast Guard Station
Port Clarence Coast Guard Station is a private-use airfield owned by the U.S. Coast Guard on Point Spencer, a gravel spit extending into the Bering Sea on Alaska's Seward Peninsula. Identified by IATA and FAA LID code KPC and ICAO code PAPC, the airfield sits about one nautical mile northeast of Port Clarence in the Nome Census Area.
The site was developed during World War II as Point Spencer Air Force Base by the U.S. Army Air Forces, with a Pierced Steel Planking runway, and was closed and mothballed around 1948. In 1963 the Port Clarence Coast Guard Station airfield was established on the former base site, and the station later supported LORAN navigation operations.
Today the airfield has a single asphalt runway, Runway 16/34, measuring about 4,497 by 120 feet (1,371 by 37 meters). There is no control tower and no published instrument procedure, and the facility is private-use with prior permission required before landing.
Located about 57 nautical miles (roughly 105 km) northwest of Nome, the airfield has no scheduled commercial passenger service. Travelers reaching this remote area generally continue by pre-arranged small aircraft, boat, or other organized transport to Nome and nearby Seward Peninsula communities such as Teller, Brevig Mission, and Wales.
