About Port Allen Airport
Port Allen Airport is a small general aviation airport on the southwest shore of Kauai, about one mile southwest of Hanapepe and near Port Allen Harbor. It serves the island mainly as a base for scenic helicopter tours, ultralight flying and skydiving rather than scheduled airline service.
Aviation at the site dates back to 1919, when an emergency landing strip was first built on Kauai. In 1928 the area was selected for a territorial airport, later named Burns Field, and in 1929 Inter-Island Airways began Kauai's first passenger service to Port Allen. The field closed during World War II and later returned to general aviation use.
The airport covers 184 acres and operates a single asphalt runway, 9/27, measuring 2,450 by 60 feet. Aircraft are restricted to less than 12,500 pounds, and the airfield has no control tower or scheduled commercial flights.
By road, Port Allen Airport is roughly 19 miles west of Lihue and provides access to Hanapepe, Port Allen Harbor, Waimea Canyon and the Poipu resort area, making it a practical gateway for air tours and recreational flying on Kauai's west side.
