About Port Alexander Seaplane Base

Port Alexander Seaplane Base is a small public-use seaplane base serving Port Alexander, a remote community at the southeastern corner of Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska. It provides the main air access point for the community and is operated as a public facility through the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

The seaplane base was activated in December 1950 and consists of a single water landing area oriented north–south, roughly 3,000 feet long and 300 feet wide. It is located immediately northeast of the village, directly on the water, so arrivals by floatplane land within easy walking distance of the community.

Because Port Alexander has no road connection, the seaplane base plays an essential role in regional travel. Floatplanes and air taxis link the village with nearby Southeast Alaska hubs such as Sitka, Petersburg and Kake, while boats serve the surrounding waterways, fishing grounds and remote cabins.

The facility is unattended and has no control tower, fuel service or terminal building. Travelers should expect simple dock-side boarding and plan passenger services in the village, while arranging onward travel by floatplane, boat or private charter.
