Airfield development at Aberdeen Proving Ground began in 1918, and the present flying field was constructed in 1943. The airfield is named for Lieutenant Wendell K. Phillips, an Army Air Service pilot who died at Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1923.
The airfield operates a single active asphalt runway, 4/22, measuring about 7,998 by 200 feet, with two older runways no longer in service. It is a private-use military facility, so landing requires advance permission and public passenger services are not available.
Located roughly two miles south of Aberdeen and about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore, the airfield is reached through Aberdeen Proving Ground and is convenient to Interstate 95 and US Route 40. For authorized travelers, it provides a direct aviation link to the installation and the surrounding Maryland region.
