About Perry Stokes Airport

Perry Stokes Airport is a public general aviation airport serving Trinidad, Las Animas County and southern Colorado. Located about 10 miles northeast of the city centre, it provides a practical air gateway for private pilots, business aviation and visitors traveling to the region.

The airport has a long local history: it was built in 1936 under the Works Progress Administration, originally as Trinidad Airport, and was later renamed for Perry F. Stokes, an early airport manager and flight instructor. Scheduled airline service operated here in past decades, including Continental Airlines DC-3 flights between Denver and Albuquerque until 1957.

Today the airport operates two runways, a 5,500-foot asphalt runway and a 5,500-foot turf-and-gravel runway, along with a single historic terminal building. It is an uncontrolled field, meaning there is no control tower, and aircraft movements are coordinated by pilots on the airport's radio frequency.

Road access is straightforward via County Road 38 from Trinidad, with private transfers, rental cars and chauffeur services available for onward travel into town, toward I-25, and to nearby destinations such as the Spanish Peaks and the Scenic Highway of Legends.
