About Ohkay Owingeh Airport
Ohkay Owingeh Airport is a public-use airport in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, about three nautical miles (6 km) northeast of downtown Española. Owned by the Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Council, it primarily serves general aviation, private flights and charter aircraft rather than scheduled airline service.
The airport was activated in November 1955 and was known as San Juan Pueblo Airport until 2008, when the name changed to reflect the pueblo's restored Tewa name. It briefly saw commercial airline service in 1978, when Trans Western Airlines included Española as a stop on a route between Albuquerque and Denver.
The facility has one active asphalt runway, 16/34, measuring 5,007 by 75 feet, while the older dirt runway 6/24 is permanently closed. There is no control tower, and operations are conducted under visual flight rules with pilot-activated runway lighting.
Located in northern New Mexico's Rio Grande Valley, the airport is convenient to Española and within driving distance of Santa Fe, Taos and Los Alamos. Onward travel is typically made by car, taxi, rental car or pre-arranged transfer along nearby state and regional roads.
