About Offutt Air Force Base
Offutt Air Force Base is a military airfield in Bellevue, Nebraska, about 16 km (10 miles) south of downtown Omaha. It is not a commercial passenger airport; instead, it supports military operations and hosts the 55th Wing and the headquarters of United States Strategic Command.
The field opened as Offutt Field in 1924 and was renamed Offutt Air Force Base in 1948, following its role as a bomber production and training site during World War II. Today it remains an active Air Force installation with a military air passenger terminal that serves eligible travelers through Air Mobility Command airlift and Space-Available travel.
Located just off U.S. Highway 75 near Bellevue, the base sits a short drive from Interstate 80 and the Omaha metropolitan area. Road access makes it straightforward to continue to downtown Omaha, Eppley Airfield, and surrounding communities by private vehicle, taxi, or rental car.
While public commercial flights do not operate from Offutt, the installation offers lodging, dining, and support facilities for military personnel and visitors. Travelers should plan around base access requirements, as entry is controlled and the air passenger terminal does not provide shuttle service.
