About Naval Air Station Oceana
Naval Air Station Oceana is a U.S. Navy military airfield serving Virginia Beach and the wider Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia. Established in 1943 as an auxiliary airfield, it later grew into the Navy's East Coast Master Jet Base and remains a central hub for carrier-based strike fighter aviation.
The station is located about 3 miles (5 km) southwest of Virginia Beach's city centre and near the Atlantic oceanfront resort area. It primarily supports F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet squadrons and other military flight operations rather than scheduled commercial passenger service.
Because NAS Oceana is an active military installation, access is restricted to authorized personnel and approved visitors, while eligible military travelers may use a limited Space-A passenger terminal. The base is reached by local roads from Virginia Beach and Norfolk, with private transfers, taxis and rental cars available for onward travel to the oceanfront, hotels and business districts.
