About Northway Airport
Northway Airport is a state-owned, public-use general aviation airport serving the community of Northway in eastern Alaska, near the Canadian border. It functions primarily as a small aviation gateway and U.S. Customs entry point for private and charter aircraft arriving from Canada.
Construction of the airport began in the early 1940s, when it was built as a military refueling and maintenance stop. During World War II it was the first stop in the Territory of Alaska on the Northwest Staging Route for Lend-Lease aircraft, and the facility later transitioned to civilian public use under Alaska DOT&PF ownership.
Northway Airport has a single asphalt runway and no commercial passenger terminal. Services are limited: a seasonal flight service station, weather reporting and aircraft parking are available, while fuel, food and lodging are generally found in nearby Tok.
Located about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Tok and reached by a short spur road from the Alaska Highway, the airport is best suited to private pilots and travelers continuing by road. Pre-arranged private transfers or rental vehicles are the most practical options for onward journeys in this remote area.
