About Naval Air Station North Island
Naval Air Station North Island is a major U.S. Navy airfield located on the Coronado peninsula, across San Diego Bay from downtown San Diego. Commissioned as a naval air station in 1917, it is recognized as the official birthplace of naval aviation and has supported Pacific Fleet aviation operations for more than a century.
The air station sits on North Island at the northern end of Coronado and is home to aircraft carrier berthing facilities, helicopter squadrons, and the largest naval aviation industrial complex on the West Coast. It serves as a key base for Navy and Marine Corps aircraft and as a homeport for Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers.
Access is via the Coronado Bridge (State Route 75), which links the installation to Interstate 5 and the wider San Diego region. Downtown San Diego is only a short drive away, and San Diego International Airport is roughly 15–25 minutes by road on the other side of the bay.
Because it is an active military installation, access to the airfield is restricted to authorized personnel, visitors with proper credentials, and official travel. Travelers and visitors arriving in the area can continue to Coronado, downtown San Diego, and other Southern California destinations by private transfer, taxi, chauffeur, or rental car.
