About North Central State Airport
North Central State Airport is a public general aviation airport in Smithfield, Rhode Island, serving the northern Providence metropolitan area. Opened in 1951, the airport is owned by the State of Rhode Island and operated by the Rhode Island Airport Corporation as a reliever for general aviation traffic in the region.
The airport is located about 8 miles (13 km) northwest of downtown Providence and close to Pawtucket, Lincoln and Woonsocket. It has two runways, the 5,000-foot Runway 5/23 and the 3,211-foot Runway 15/33, and operates without a control tower. The airport supports private, corporate and charter flights as well as flight training, aircraft maintenance and seasonal skydiving.
Rather than a large commercial terminal, North Central State Airport is organized around a small terminal/FBO building. FlightLevel Aviation serves as the fixed base operator and provides aircraft parking, fueling, baggage handling, deicing, a pilot lounge, conference space, Wi-Fi and other ground services. Customs clearance is available on request for international general aviation arrivals.
By road, the airport is convenient to Route 146 and local routes in northern Rhode Island, placing Providence, Pawtucket and surrounding communities within a short drive.
