Nome Airport is the main public airport serving Nome and the surrounding Seward Peninsula in western Alaska. Located on the Bering Sea coast, it functions as a vital regional hub connecting remote communities with Anchorage and the rest of Alaska.
The airport began as Marks Army Airfield during World War II and played a role in the Lend-Lease program ferrying aircraft to the Soviet Union. After the war it was transferred to civilian use and later modernized with paved runways to accommodate larger aircraft.
Situated about two nautical miles west of downtown Nome, the airport has a single passenger terminal and two runways. It handles scheduled service from Alaska Airlines and regional carriers such as Bering Air and Ravn Alaska, along with cargo, charter and general aviation traffic.
Because the region has no rail or scheduled public bus service, travelers reach Nome by taxi, pre-arranged transfer, hotel shuttle or rental car. The short drive to the city centre and the airport's role as a staging point for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race make it an important gateway for visitors to western Alaska.
