About Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach
Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach, commonly known as Ream Field, is a U.S. Navy helicopter facility located in Imperial Beach, San Diego County, California. The airfield was first established in 1917 as a U.S. Army aviation field and was renamed in 1918 in honor of Maj. William Roy Ream, the first flight surgeon killed in an aircraft accident.
The Navy began using the field in the 1920s, and it received its first helicopter squadron in 1951 before becoming Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach in 1975. Today the facility is part of Naval Base Coronado and serves as the only exclusive-use naval helicopter airfield on the West Coast, handling about 95 percent of flight operations for helicopter squadrons based at nearby Naval Air Station North Island.
Situated roughly 14 miles south of downtown San Diego and near the United States-Mexico border, the airfield operates two runways and is used primarily for helicopter training, practice approaches, and military flight operations. It is not a commercial passenger airport.
Because it is an active military installation, access is restricted to authorized personnel and pre-coordinated flights. Civilian travelers arriving in the San Diego area generally use San Diego International Airport or other public airports for commercial flights.
