It serves as an auxiliary airfield for Naval Air Station Whiting Field and Naval Air Station Pensacola, supporting military flight training with touch-and-go landings and practice instrument approaches.
The site has deep military roots. The original West Field was established where Foley Municipal Airport was built in the mid-1930s and leased by the U.S. Navy in 1942, forming part of a twin-field complex. Today the East Field continues to operate as NOLF Barin, with FAA records listing its activation in 1980.
The airfield sits close to Foley, about 5 km from the town centre, and is roughly 21 km from Gulf Shores, with Orange Beach and Pensacola also nearby. It is reached by road, but access is restricted because the field is used for military operations rather than scheduled passenger flights.
Barin has two 5,000-foot asphalt runways and no public passenger terminal. Travelers visiting the Alabama Gulf Coast typically use nearby Gulf Shores International Airport or Pensacola International Airport for commercial flights.
