About Naval Air Station Key West / Boca Chica Field

Naval Air Station Key West is a U.S. Navy air station on Boca Chica Key in Monroe County, Florida, and one of the country's southernmost military airfields. Boca Chica Field serves as the Navy's premier training location for tactical aviation squadrons, with nearby aerial ranges allowing aviators to begin training maneuvers shortly after takeoff.

The field was activated in February 1944 and is now part of the larger Naval Air Station Key West complex, which includes several annexes across the lower Florida Keys. Boca Chica Field operates three paved runways and supports fighter and attack aircraft training, including the Navy Reserve adversary squadron VFC-111 'Sun Downers,' along with rotating squadrons from across the U.S. armed forces.

Located about 4 miles east of central Key West along the Overseas Highway (US 1), the air station is roughly 93 miles north of Cuba and about 163 miles southwest of Miami. Access is restricted to authorized personnel, so most civilian travelers reach Key West through Key West International Airport (EYW) about 4 miles to the west, then continue by taxi, shuttle, rental car or private transfer.

Because it is a military installation rather than a commercial airport, NQX does not offer scheduled passenger service or public terminal facilities. Its importance lies in military training and national security missions, while the nearby civilian airport and the Overseas Highway provide the main passenger connections for visitors to Key West and the Florida Keys.
