About Naukati Bay Seaplane Base
Located at Nichin Cove on the east side of Tuxekan Island in southeast Alaska, Naukati Bay Seaplane Base is a small public-use seaplane base serving the Naukati Bay area in the Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area. Formerly known as Nichin Cove Seaplane Base, it lies about 2 nautical miles (4 km) southwest of the community of Naukati Bay on Prince of Wales Island.
The base is owned by the Naukati Bay Community and offers water landing areas rather than paved runways, with two designated water runways. It is used mainly by floatplanes connecting remote southeast Alaska settlements and has no scheduled airline terminal, fuel service, control tower or instrument approaches.
Naukati Bay is roughly 71 miles (114 km) northwest of Ketchikan and about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Coffman Cove. Travelers generally arrive by floatplane and can continue to regional communities such as Klawock, Craig, Ketchikan, Wrangell and Petersburg through local air and water services.
As an unattended water-based facility, the base requires advance planning: visitors should confirm floatplane charters, weather, tides and docking arrangements before travel. It serves as a practical water gateway between Tuxekan Island, Prince of Wales Island and the wider southeast Alaska region.
