About Moore County Airport
Moore County Airport is a public general aviation airport serving Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and the surrounding Sandhills region of Moore County, North Carolina. It functions as an important gateway for private and charter travelers, particularly visitors heading to the area's golf resorts and communities.
The facility was established in 1929 when the Tufts family, founders of the Pinehurst Resort, opened a dirt runway known as Knollwood Airport. Moore County acquired the airport in 1935, and it served as a U.S. Army Air Corps training field during World War II before transitioning to general aviation use in 1945. Piedmont Airlines later provided scheduled service until the late 1960s.
Today the airport operates from a single passenger terminal and a roughly 6,500-foot runway capable of handling aircraft up to Boeing 737 size. It offers flight training, aircraft maintenance, charter services, and general aviation support, with the airfield open 24/7 and terminal operating hours from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Located about three miles north of Southern Pines and five miles northeast of Pinehurst, the airport provides convenient access to local golf destinations and the wider Moore County area. Ground transportation includes car rental, resort shuttles, taxis, and private transfer options.
