About Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport
Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport is a public general aviation airport serving San Diego and the surrounding region. Opened in 1937 as Gibbs Field with a single runway, it is now operated by the City of San Diego and functions as an FAA-designated reliever airport for San Diego International Airport.
The airport sits in the Kearny Mesa area about six miles north of downtown San Diego. It serves private, corporate, charter, air ambulance, law enforcement, fire rescue, flight training and light cargo operations rather than scheduled airline flights, and is one of the region's busiest general aviation facilities.
Passenger services are provided through fixed-base operators and the airport terminal building rather than commercial airline terminals. The airfield has three runways, a control tower operating daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and supporting services including fuel, maintenance, hangars and tiedowns.
The airport is located near State Route 163 and Interstate 805, with car rental, taxis, private transfers and road links making it easy to reach downtown San Diego, La Jolla, Mission Bay and other parts of the region.
