About Moffett Federal Airfield
Moffett Federal Airfield is a joint civil-military airport in Mountain View, California, at the heart of Silicon Valley. Established in 1933 as Naval Air Station Sunnyvale, it was built around the landmark Hangar One to support the U.S. Navy airship USS Macon and was later renamed in honor of Rear Admiral William A. Moffett.
After the naval air station closed in 1994, the facility was transferred to NASA Ames Research Center and has operated since as Moffett Federal Airfield. Located about 5 km (3 miles) north of downtown Mountain View and near the south end of San Francisco Bay, the airport serves private, corporate, and charter aircraft rather than scheduled airline flights.
Its two long runways and FBO facilities make it a practical gateway for business aviation serving Silicon Valley, with easy access to Palo Alto, San Jose, and San Francisco via nearby freeways and onward travel by car, taxi, private transfer, or chauffeur service.
Facilities include a passenger terminal and lounge, Jet A fuel, aircraft parking, and FBO services, with the historic Hangar One as a notable local landmark on the field.
