Mitchell Municipal Airport is a public-use general aviation airport serving Mitchell, South Dakota, and the surrounding James River Valley region. Opened in November 1937, the airfield was rebuilt in 1943 by the United States Army Air Forces as Mitchell Army Airfield and used for B-17 and B-24 heavy bomber training during World War II before being returned to the city for civilian use.
Located about three miles north of downtown Mitchell, the airport is a regional hub for private, charter and business aviation, with two asphalt runways. Runway 13/31 is the primary instrument runway with an ILS approach, while runway 18/36 provides additional capacity for general aviation traffic.
