Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is a United States Marine Corps airfield located in San Diego, California. The installation traces its origins to 1917, when the site was established as Camp Kearny, and the airfield is known as Mitscher Field.
The air station is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and supports military aviation operations rather than scheduled commercial airline service. It lies about 15 miles (24 km) north of downtown San Diego and is surrounded by residential communities including Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch and University City.
Access is restricted to military personnel, authorized visitors and approved flights, with prior permission required for transient aircraft. Road connections include Miramar Road, Interstate 15 and Interstate 805, linking the base to central San Diego and nearby coastal areas such as La Jolla and Mission Bay.
