About Minchumina Airport

Minchumina Airport is a state-owned public-use airport serving Lake Minchumina in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area of interior Alaska. It provides a lifeline connection for this small, roadless community, with scheduled passenger service subsidized by the United States Department of Transportation's Essential Air Service program and operated by Wright Air Service to Fairbanks.

The airport has a single gravel runway designated 3/21, measuring about 4,200 by 100 feet, at an elevation of approximately 682 feet. It was developed along the edge of the lake during the World War II era, and the facility remains simple, with one small passenger building rather than a large terminal complex. The airport supports scheduled service, charter flights, general aviation, and mail and supply deliveries.

Located roughly 150 miles southwest of Fairbanks and about 65 miles northwest of Denali, the airport is the main access point for Lake Minchumina. There is no year-round road access to the community, so small aircraft provide the reliable link for passengers, mail and supplies, while ground transport at the airstrip is limited and must be arranged in advance.

Travelers should expect a basic, remote airport experience, with a sheltered waiting area but no restaurants, shops or lounges. Visitors are advised to bring food, water and essential supplies and to confirm flights in advance because weather can affect schedules. As a small regional gateway, the airport connects this remote part of interior Alaska to Fairbanks and the wider state.
