About Miami Municipal Airport

Miami Municipal Airport (MIO), also known as Miami Regional Airport, is a public general aviation airport serving Miami, Oklahoma, and the broader Four State Area where Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas meet. Opened in December 1937, the airport supports private, business and recreational aviation rather than scheduled commercial airline service.

Located about 2 miles northwest of downtown Miami, the facility has two asphalt runways, 17/35 and 2/20, and occupies roughly 300 acres. It provides a convenient general aviation option for pilots and travelers heading to Miami, the Grand Lake area, Grove and other northeast Oklahoma communities, while nearby Joplin Regional Airport offers commercial flights about 24 miles to the northeast.

In 2025, the airport opened a new municipally operated FBO terminal of about 4,000 square feet, replacing a much older facility. The terminal includes a passenger lobby, pilot lounge, showers, a 16-seat conference room, an outdoor observation patio and a covered drop-off area, and the airport also offers 28 rentable hangars, a jet pad and 24-hour self-service fueling.

Ground access to Miami and the surrounding region is typically by rental car, taxi, pre-arranged private transfer or the airport's courtesy cars. This makes the airport a practical entry point for private flights into northeast Oklahoma and the Grand Lake region.
