About Metlakatla Seaplane Base

Metlakatla Seaplane Base is a public-use seaplane facility serving Metlakatla, the community on Annette Island in Southeast Alaska. It provides floatplane connections that link the island community with Ketchikan and other communities in the region.

Activated in December 1950 and owned by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities Southcoast Region, the base operates from a seaplane float and dock. Its water landing area includes east-west and north-south lanes, each roughly 5,000 feet long and 5,000 feet wide, and there is no control tower or published instrument approach.

The seaplane base sits within Metlakatla, a community not connected to the mainland road network. A road links Metlakatla to the Annette Bay ferry terminal, where Alaska Marine Highway ferry service provides connections to Ketchikan, while Ketchikan International Airport lies about 14 nautical miles to the north.

As a compact seaplane base, MTM has limited terminal facilities, and passengers are advised to confirm check-in, baggage and boarding details with their floatplane operator. Basic services and supplies can be found in the surrounding community, and weather cameras support flight planning.
