About Mertarvik Airport
Mertarvik Airport is the public-use airport serving Mertarvik, a small Yup'ik community on Nelson Island in the Bethel Census Area of western Alaska. It was built as a replacement for Newtok Airport and opened to air traffic in fall 2022, giving the relocated community a dependable air link at its new village site.
Located about 1 mile west of Mertarvik village and roughly 9 miles from the old Newtok townsite, the airport has a single gravel runway. It primarily handles small air taxi and charter aircraft, with scheduled and on-demand connections to Bethel, the region's main transportation and service hub.
There is no road connection between Mertarvik and Bethel, so the airport is essential for supplies, mail, medical access, and passenger travel, especially in winter when river travel is limited. Ground movement at the airport and village is generally by local vehicle, ATV, or snowmachine.
Facilities are basic rather than commercial: the airport has runway lighting and aircraft parking, but no passenger terminal, shops, or restaurants. Travelers should confirm flight schedules and local transport in advance, as weather and remote operating conditions can affect service.

Terminal Overview

Terminals
