Merle K. (Mudhole) Smith Airport is the main commercial airport serving Cordova and the eastern Prince William Sound region of Alaska. The airport is named after Merle K. "Mudhole" Smith, a pilot who became president of Cordova Airlines in 1939. Cordova Airlines used the airport as a hub between 1934 and 1968, when it was acquired by Alaska Airlines, which continues to provide scheduled service today.
