About Mercedita International Airport
Mercedita International Airport is the main airport serving Ponce and the southern coast of Puerto Rico. Located about 5 km east of central Ponce, the airport connects the region to the U.S. mainland through regular commercial flights operated by airlines such as JetBlue and Frontier.
The airport's history dates to 1939, when it began as a small aerodrome used for airborne irrigation of sugarcane fields on the former Hacienda Mercedita. It was later transferred to the Puerto Rico Ports Authority and began operations in 1948, and in 1990 it was inaugurated as Mercedita International Airport after customs and border control facilities were added.
The airport operates through a single compact passenger terminal, making arrivals and departures relatively straightforward for travelers. The runway and facilities also support general aviation and military activity alongside scheduled commercial services.
