Mefford Field is a public use general aviation airport serving Tulare, California, and the surrounding San Joaquin Valley. Owned and operated by the City of Tulare, the field opened in July 1940 and served as a training site for the Rankin Aeronautical Academy, which prepared United States Army Air Corps flight cadets.
The airport sits about three miles (6 km) southeast of downtown Tulare and is named after Oliver Mefford, a World War II aviator and longtime Tulare city councilmember. It has one asphalt runway, 13/31, measuring 3,901 by 75 feet, along with hangars, tiedown parking and aircraft fueling for general aviation.
As a general aviation gateway, the field supports private, business and agricultural flying in California's Central Valley and offers road access to Tulare, nearby Visalia, and the Sequoia and Kings Canyon region. Most onward travel is made by car, taxi, rideshare or pre-arranged transfer.
