About McConnell Air Force Base
McConnell Air Force Base is a U.S. Air Force installation serving Wichita and south-central Kansas. Home to Air Mobility Command KC-135 Stratotanker and KC-46 Pegasus aerial refueling aircraft, the base plays a key role in military logistics and global air operations rather than functioning as a commercial passenger airport.
The site opened in 1935 as Wichita Municipal Airport and later became an Air Force base in the early 1950s, when it was renamed in honor of the McConnell brothers. It is located about 4 miles southeast of downtown Wichita, while the city's main civilian gateway is Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport.
A single Air Mobility Command passenger terminal supports eligible military travelers and their families through Space-Available flights, with check-in, roll call, and security screening completed at the terminal. Commercial airline passengers generally use the nearby civilian airport instead.
Ground access to the base is available by taxi, rideshare, private transfer, and rental car, with limited local bus service nearby. Its location near the city makes it convenient for authorized visitors continuing to Wichita and surrounding communities.
