About McChord Field
McChord Field is a U.S. Air Force airfield within Joint Base Lewis-McChord, serving the Tacoma area, Pierce County, and the wider Puget Sound region of Washington. It supports air mobility operations, military passenger travel, and cargo movements rather than commercial airline service.
The airfield opened in 1930 as Tacoma Field and was renamed McChord Field in 1940 in honor of Colonel William C. McChord. After the U.S. Air Force was established in 1947, it became McChord Air Force Base, and in 2010 it merged with Fort Lewis to form Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Located south of Tacoma, roughly 12 miles from the city center, McChord Field is connected to the region by Interstate 5 and local roads. Commercial airline passengers typically use Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to the north, while McChord Field handles military and official travel.
